DRAG KING 101 WORKSHOP:
"It was really helpful to finally get it out there, and also to hear your comments on the other pieces. My favorite was about finding a "center of energy" for the character and figuring out what fundamentally motivates him, then using that to inform everything else. I think that idea is brilliant and applies to our real personas in life too - it's rarely done, but once we ask ourselves what our own center of energy is and verbalize it, make it concrete, everything else falls into place." ~ Sophy Lee (Student)

Drag King 101 is your opportunity to explore your inner Drag King AND create a piece for performance! We will explore the ins and outs of what makes a successful Drag King through gender illusion, costuming, physicality, character creation, acting technique, movement, and story development. This course culminates with each student creating their own performance piece.
So, what’s a Drag King again?: Well, perhaps you’ve heard of a Drag Queen? Simply put, a Drag King is the counterpart – a performance critiquing the masculine character in society. The drag culture at large generally injects politics, pop-culture commentary, sexuality, orientation, identity and gender exploration into the center of much of its material… While we each develop our own POV on the art form, we’ll also touch on: Bio Queens and Drag Queens, High Femme Performance, Transgender Identity vs. Gender Performance, Queer and Straight: identity/behavior/orientation, and so much more…
This workshop is open to people of all gender identities who are interested in performing as a King.
